"We have only one week though Bo."
Bo sighed as he rubbed his stiff neck. "I know but where can we got
for so short a time?"
"How about we go to Galvaston and go to the beach. I haven't been to
the beach in a long time and Libby hasn't seen the ocean yet."
Bo leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knee and rubbing his face
when he heard someone else's opinion. "Oh I don't know... San Antonio
can be fun even though we don't have a beach."
Bo heard the voice of his sister in his mind and he got a distant look
in his eyes."Min it ain't nice to spy!"
"Sorry Bro, couldn't help it..."
Kelly raised an eyebrow as she watched her husband staring off into
space. "Bo? What are you doing?"
Bo blinked and came out of his stupor for a moment. "Oh I'm sorry Honey,
my dear sister made herself known."
"Oh." Kelly replied. "What did she say?"
"She said she wants us to come to San Antonio."
"Right! We got lots of room and it isn't but 4 hours drive..."
Kelly thought about it for a moment. "You know, that might not be such
a bad idea." she said
Bo nodded. "And she said she's got plenty of room and it's not far.
Why don't you call her and talk out the details."
Kelly nodded and sat down on the bed, reached around Bo and picked
up the receiver. She dialed the number and waited for Min to answer.
Min was sitting on her medium blue couch, her television on MUTE. The
phone began to ring and she picked it up.
"Hi Kelly..."
"Hey Min. How are you?"
"Oh...as good as I can be for someone that's 7 months pregnant, but
I'm making due. So are you and Bo coming to San Antonio?"
"Well if your sure we won't be in the way."
"No way! We have three spare rooms and we have that pool and the animals.
I think it would be a lot of fun!"
Kelly grinned. "Alright, that sounds good."
"Great! It's settled! Why don't you guys come out tomorrow night, since
it is Friday."
"We'll be there..Hey, do you want to talk to Bo?"
"Oh sure, put the BIG LUG on." Min said with a smile.
"See you tomorrow night then." Kelly said and handed the phone
to Bo.
"Hey sis" Bo said as he put the reciever up to his ear
"Hey, I take it you heard all that. You don't mind spending your vacation
time with me and James do you?"
Bo shook his head. "No i don't mind. It will give us a chance
to see ya'll since its been awhile since the last time we were all together."
"Yeah but you'll proabl laugh at me since I have this big tummy."
"Ah, its ok." Bo told her. "I didn't laugh at Kelly when she had one."
"Well I could tell you what it is but I'm going to be MEAN and say
that I ain't going to til you get here."
"Fine, be that way."
Min sighed. "Oh you are no FUN big brother..."
"I try." Bo said as he chuckled
"Yes, very HARD too I might add. So for that you won't know 'til you
get here."
"Well i think i can wait until tomorrow night." Bo said
"Okay fine BE that way!" Min paused to laugh and then she cleared
her throat. "All right then, dinner is at 6 will you all be here by then?"
"Yeah, we can get there by then."
"What time do you guys think you are going to leave? Sometime tomorrow
morning?"
"Hang on, let me ask Kelly." Bo said and put a hand over the
speaker part of the phone and looked at his wife. "When do you want to
leave in the morning?"
Kelly thought about it for a moment. "Well we aren't in a big hurry,
how about we leave here around 8 and get there around noon? Does she mind
if we are there for lunch?"
"Hey sis. You mind if we get there by lunch?"
"Sure! I'll whip up something and I'll set up the twin bed for
Libby."
"That sounds good." Bo told her. "Just don't strain yourself."
"No problem, there is a set of twin beds in the second spare room,
all I gotta do is add that bar so she doesn't roll out. Don't worry James
hovers over me."
Bo laughed."And how is my brother in law?"
"Good, busy.. probably the busiest paramedic in San Antonio. I'll fill
ya in on more tomorrow at lunch. You just drive carefully okay Lead foot?"
"Lead foot?" Bo said innocently. "Who's got a lead foot?"
"You do! And I know Kelly would agree with me."
Kelly had heard the comment and she laughed. "He does have a lead foot,
but he won't be driving fast tomorrow."
"See! You just get yourself here in one piece and we'll talk more tomorrow."
Will do." Bo said and laughed. "Talk to you later. Bye sis."
"Bye.."
Min hung up the phone and with a little effort, got off the couch
and went to tell James about the company that was coming.
After the phone call ended, Bo and Kelly packed everything they
would need for a little over a week in San Antonio. Kelly did laundry and
got all the clothes together, while Bo packed Olivia's stuff. Finally at
around midnight, the couple was packed and went to bed.
Bo's alarm clock went off at 6 am and he and Kelly got up. Bo packed
up their van while Kelly fed Olivia. By 7 45, they were on the road to
San Antonio
The weather was getting warmer, even though it was not officially Spring
yet and after two hours of driving, Bo pulled over to a rest area and took
out his suitcase.
Kelly got out of the van as well and walked to the back of the car.
"Bo, what are you doing?
Bo took out a pair of tennis shoes and some clothes out of his suitcase
and zipped it back up. "I'm going to change. Be right back." He went into
the restroom and Kelly shrugged her shoulders and got back into the van.
Kelly was entertaining Olivia when Bo came out of the bathroom. He
had put on a pair of jeans, a tan shirt and his boots and now he was wearing
a pair of jean shorts, a green pocket t-shirt and sneakers. He had put
on his sunglasses and Kelly covered her mouth, trying not to laugh. Bo
stuck his clothes back in the suitcase and got into the driver's seat.
"Rats." Kelly said. "Now i don't get to pinch you."
Bo lowered his shades and raised an eyebrow. "Who said that?"
Kelly laughed. "Your wife, remember me?"
"I know that Silly I mean that you don't ever need an
excuse to put your hands on me." He said with a grin as he started up the
van and got back on the freeway.
Another two hours of driving and they arrived at the sign that read..
San Antonio City Limits. Bo pulled over at a nearby gas station and took
off his glasses, he pulled out his little address book and looked at the
directions Min had given him ages ago.
"Well while you figure out how not to get us lost." Kelly said with
a smiled. "Libby and I are going to visit the ladies room. Be back in a
few minutes."
"Okay." Bo said as he pulled out his map and looked at it. He looked
at something and nodded his head. "Aha!" He put everything away and waited
for his wife to come back.
Kelly came back a few minutes later and put Libby back in her seat
and climbed in the front. "You know where we are going?"
"Yes! And thanks for the vote of confidence!"
Kelly grinned at him. "Hey no problem."
Bo put his sunglasses back on and got back on the road. He turned down
one of the roads that went around the city and made a right on the route
21 junction. The area they were driving through turned to lush green fields
and Bo smiled when he saw the sign for Fuego street. He turned down it
and the only house on it belonged to his sister. It was a huge barn style
house with a big green yard and a red mustang in the driveway.
"There is Li'l Darlin'." He said as he pulled in behind it.
Kelly eyed her husband with a grin. "So she's named her car to?"
Bo looked at his wife and smiled. "It's a Duke thing, come on." He
said as he turned off the van and opened his door.
Min was inside finishing cooking lunch when she got a strong feeling.
She turned off the stove and smiled, she could feel her brother and his
family coming up the driveway. She wiped her hands on a dishtowel and dashed
to the door. She opened it and stepped out on the porch, acting cool and
collected. She saw her brother wearing shorts and she started to laugh.
"Oh such cute legs!"
"Oh hush." Bo said as he walked up the driveway towards her.
Min covered her mouth, stifling a giggle. "Well I'm sorry but
this is the first time I've ever seen you in shorts!"
Kelly looked at Bo and realized that his sister was right about the
cute legs. She let out a wolf whistle.
Bo turned to his wife and stuck his tongue out at her. He then turned
to look back at his sister. "Hey, you don't look as bad as you made
it sound." he stepped up on the porch beside her and gave her a hug. "Its
been awhile."
"Yeah it has." She said as she hugged him. "And are you kidding! I'm
huge! I can't wear any of my mid drift stuff!"
Bo laughed. "Well you will be able to again once the baby is born...Speaking
of which, what is it? Boy or Girl?
Min let go of her brother and smiled. "Wouldn't you like to know!"
She saw Kelly and hugged her and Olivia. "Hey Kelly, my brother treating
you good?"
Kelly hugged her sister-in-law and nodded. "Yeah he is great." She
said as she looked at Bo and winked at him.
Bo grinned and looked back at his sister. "Come on Min, what is the
baby going to be?"
Min took her brother and sister in law by the hand and tugged on them.
"Come inside, it's hot out here."
"Okay, okay." Bo said laughing. "We're coming."
Min dragged them both inside and into her kitchen, she made them
sit down at the table and poured them some ice tea.
"Well, I haven't told James yet... but it's a boy." She said as she
sat down.
"Boy, wow." Bo said. "Any ideas for a name?"
Kelly set Olivia on her lap and sipped her tea. "A boy that's
great!"
Min shrugged her shoulders. "Nah not really, I haven't told James."
"Well i'm sure he will be happy." Bo told her
"Yeah, so you all want lunch or the grand tour?"
"How about we eat first." Bo told her as he looked at Kelly
Kelly nodded and set Olivia down in one the chair."So what is for lunch?"
"Taco Salad." Min said as she got out the plates and forks.
After their lunch, Min took them to the garage and uncovered a small
golf cart. "We can tour in this! Hop on!"
"Are you sure you should be driving this thing in your condition?"
Bo asked as he sat down
"Oh come on! I need this thing just to get to my mailbox!" Min said
as she sat down in the driver's seat and buckled her seat belt.
Kelly put Olivia in her lap and fastened the seat belt around both
of them. "Are you sure you can drive this thing?"
"Absolutely." Min pushed the button and the little golf cart started
up. She backed out of the garage and started down the trial that went around
the land.
"How many acres do you own?" Bo asked after a moment
"We got 300 acres. Right now James is learning about horses cause we
got a corral and a stable out here."
Bo whistled. "That's alot of land Min...Yeah we just bought a ranch
and its got only 100 acres."
"Yeah it is but-" A ringing in her pocket stopped her in mid-sentence
and she stopped the cart and dig her small phone out. "Hello..."
"Hey sweetheart."
Min smiled and cupped the phone. "It's James." She said as she looked
at Bo and Kelly. "Hey Honey, what's up?"
"Wanted to see if Bo and them got there ok and to tell you i will be
home by six."
"Oh yeah they got here just fine, I'm in the electric mule showing
them around. Six? Okay I won't start dinner 'til 5 then,"
"Sounds good. What is for dinner?"
"Ummm, don't know yet. What do you want?"
"Hmm." James said. "Well why don't you ask our guests."
Min turned to look at them. "Okay, I'll make something, be careful
and I'll see ya later."
"Alright sweetie...Love you."
"Love you too, bye."
Min hung up the little phone and set it down on the seat as she
resumed their trip.
"So that was the hardest working paramedic in San Antonio huh?"
"Yeah it was, he'll be home at 6, he said dinner was up to you guys,
so what do you want?"
Bo thought about for a moment. "How about steak?" he asked and turned
to Kelly. "Sound good to you?"
Kelly nodded. "Yeah and baked spuds with sour cream."
I'll slap some on the grill and wrap some spuds in foil and throw them
in with the briquettes."
Bo raised an eyebrow. "Do what with the potatoes?"
Min looked at her brother and creased her brow. "Haven't you ever had
a grilled potato? You wrap a potato in foil and put it with the charcoal,
the heat makes it so good. Trust me you'll like it."
"Alright, i'll take your word for it." Bo told her, grinniing
"Good, would I try and poison my brother?"
Bo raised an eyebrow. "I don't know, you might."
Min turned around and looked at Kelly, who was trying not to
laugh. She faced forward again and grinned at her brother. "Nah I wouldn't
...too many witnesses."
"MIN!." Bo said, grinning as he hit her lightly on her right arm
Kelly tapped Min on the shoulder and leaned in closer to whisper to
her. "And one of them is a cop!"
Bo crossed his arms and grinned at his sister. "Yeah i've got protection."
Min raised an eyebrow and looked over her shoulder at Olivia. "Oh yeah?
Honey if you did, you wouldn't have that little cupcake in the back seat
sitting on her mother's lap!"
"Min." Bo said as he turned red
The two women started laughing.
Min showed them the place that she and James called home, it wasn't
until almost an hour later when they returned back to the nicely air-conditioned
house. Kelly put Olivia down for her nap and while she slept the three
adults talked.
"So sis." Bo said as he started the conversation off. "Have you talked
to Luke lately?"
"Umm, I called him the other day but just got the machine. He's been
hard to get a hold of lately."
Bo nodded. "Yeah, he keeps pretty busy with being a Fire Marshal and
all."
Min sat back in her couch and crossed her legs under her. "I know but
I would like to talk to him once in a while.. LA can't be burning every
night!"
Kelly saw how Min was sitting and she laughed. "What about Daisy?"
Bo snickered. "It does seem that way..Well he's also been busy with
his family, Tracy is due shortly with her baby."
"Oh I talked to Daisy a couple of days ago." She turned to her brother
and shook her head. "Holy Cow another baby? Don't drink the water."
Bo laughed. "Well he did tell me that its supposed to be a girl....so
you are having the first boy in the family."
Min lifted her head and stuck her nose in the air as she touched her
tummy. "There ya go! The first boy." She cocked her head to the hallway.
"Kelly, Libby is awake."
Kelly set down her tea and looked at Min. "Good ears! Excuse me." She
said as she went down the hall to get her daughter.
Min smiled as she left the room. "I didn't use my ears to hear her."
"That's something i wanted to talk to you about sis." Bo said as his
wife left. "Do you think Libby has powers, i'm not sure right now if she
does or not."
"She does have them Bo, I know she is only two, but she did get them
from you, just like my son will have them."
Bo nodded. "Which powers do you think she has?"
Min looked at him seriously for a moment. "She's got the same ones
you do Bo, including pyrokinesis."
"Yikes." Bo said
"That is a good reaction because it will develop as the rest of her
powers does. See our firepower was triggered, but hers is natural. You
are going to have to really work with her to control it Bo."
Kelly came back with Libby and sat down on the couch. Min saw the little
girl, who looked so much like Bo that it wasn't funny. "Come here Honey,
Aunt Min wants to check something."
Libby got down from her mother's lap and sat down with her Aunt. Min
picked up the little girl and touched her forehead.
Kelly saw her and looked at her husband with a questioning face.
"What are you doing Min?" Bo asked
Min looked at them both as she sat Libby down in her lap. "I just wanted
to see if I was right about her powers."
Kelly looked at Bo with wide eyes."Bo? Is she saying that Libby will
have powers like yours?"
Bo took his wife's hand and squeezed it. "Yes. Min just told me Olivia
will have powers as well, she just wants to check to see if she's right...Its
ok honey, i'll work with her to help her learn how to use them."
"And so will I Kelly. I promise." Min added.
Kelly nodded her head and swallowed hard. "What about the fire
Bo?"
Bo looked at his sister. "Min, do you want to explain this to her?"
Min nodded and moved closer to her sister-in-law. "Kelly, has Bo ever
shown you his firepower?"
Kelly nodded a little. "He has once."
"What did he do?"
"He lit a candle one time."
Min raised an eyebrow to her brother. "That's all? A candle?"
Bo nodded. "Yeah....Well, i didnt' want to scare her or anything."
Min nodded and turned back to Kelly. "It's stronger than that Kelly,
he could easily burn down a whole town. You really have no idea how strong
it is?"
No, he's told me, he just hasn't shown me." Kelly told her
"I think you should be shown because it burns inside your daughter
and it will grow with her and her other powers." Min looked at her brother
and got up. "I think we better go outside."
Min took Bo, Kelly and Olivia out to her back porch. There was
a large barbecuer outside and Min took the grill off of it and lifted a
large chunk of wood and placed it inside. "Okay Bo, show her." She said
as she stepped back.
Bo nodded and started concentrating on the wood. After a moment the
wood started to smoke and then suddenly it burst into flames. Bo let it
burn for a moment, then he pulled the power back inside of him and the
fire went out a moment later.
Min smiled and nodded her head. "Thank you for not letting it out totally,
you would have melted the barbecuer and I don't think James would have
liked that." She turned to Kelly and saw her stunned face. "So what did
you think of that Kelly?"
"So Libby will be able to do that?" Kelly stammered looking at Min
Min nodded her head. "Yes and it will grow stronger." She turned
her head to the wood and looked at it. The fire returned to it and it turned
a black ash color and crumbled some before Min stopped.
"Still nice and strong for you too huh." Bo said as he saw what his
sister did to the wood.
"I don't know about this." Kelly said
"It's going to be okay Kelly, if we start training Libby when she first
shows signs that it is active, she will be able to control it. And extreme
emotions won't trigger it." She said that last part in a low voice.
Kelly frowned. "What do you mean?"
Min sighed and closed her eyes for a moment. "It can come out if you
get extremely angry or extremely upset. "She looked at her brother and
smiled. "Did you ever tell her about Chief Blackwood Bo?"
Kelly raised an eyebrow at her husband. "No, i don't think he's told
me that story yet."
Bo gave his wife a sheepish grin. "What happened was, one time we was
at the Boars Nest. Luke, Min and me, there was this jerk named Neil Owens,
and he said something about my mother. I don't know how it happened, I
was angry and I got angrier when he said that and all of a sudden I shifted
my gaze to Boss' wooden Indian and it burst into fire."
"Boy did it ever, I gave Boss 500 bucks to keep him out of jail." Min
added.
Kelly laughed. "Well remind me never to get on your bad side."
"Oh come on, that was a long time ago and I have control over it now."
Min nodded. "He's right, that was when he barely gotten it and was
still a tad out of control."
"I know honey, i was just teasing you." Kelly said. "I'm sorry"
Min felt a tug on her hand and she looked down at her niece."What is
it Honey?"
Olivia looked at Min. "You and Daddy burned that log."
"Yes Honey we did, why don't we go inside?" Min looked at her parents
and smiled.
Both Bo and Kelly nodded and followed Min inside the house.
Min took her niece into the living room so she could play and motioned
for Libby's parents to go with her so they could talk. They went into the
kitchen and Min sighed. "She's aware of things, and I'd say that within
the next year, she'll start doing stuff."
"So soon?" Bo asked
"I think so, I was 4 when I got mine." Min turned to look at Kelly.
"Does this scare you?"
"It does scare me a little yes." Kelly said. "But i'm ok with it and
I know both you and Bo will help her develop them."
"Yeah we will." Min clapped her hands together and looked at the clock.
"Well I better go warm up the grill, James will be home soon."
"Sounds good to me." Bo said
"Me to." Kelly added
Min had the grill going a short time later, and put the steaks and potatos
on the grill by half-past four. At 5 after 6, the front door opened and
in walked James in his bright neon yellow Paramedic shirt.
"Anyone home?" he asked as he came in
Min was on the backporch with her guests when she heard her husband.
She smiled and went racing into the house. "James!" She said as she practically
tackled him.
"Whoa! Easy sweetheart." James said as he kissed her. "I'm glad to
see you to."
Min suddenly remember about the person she was carrying and she put
her hand to her stomach. "I'm fine, come on and say hello." She said as
she tugged at his arm.
James grinned and patted his wife's stomach. "Hello little one." he
said
Min felt the baby kick suddenly and she laughed at the sensation. "No
Honey, I meant my brother, and sisterinlaw and niece, they are on the back
porch while I grill."
"Oh...sorry." James said and chuckled "Lead the way."
Min was smiling widely as she dragged her husband through the kitchen
and out the back door. Bo was minding the grill and Libby and Kelly were
sitting on the white patio furniture, under the white umbrella.
"Look who is home!"
Kelly saw her brother-in-law and she got out of her chair. "Hi James,
long time no see." She said as she hugged him.
Bo looked up from the grill and smiled at his brother in law. "Hey
James. How are you?"
"Hey Kelly" James said as she hugged him "How are you?"
"Oh I'm fine, aren't you bright as a ripe banana." She said as she
looked at his shirt.
James laughed. "Yeah i guess i do." he said and looked at Bo. "And
how are you doing?"
"I'm fine." Bo said "Min do you want to take back over?"
"Aww, do I have to?" She asked, and pouted.
Bo smiled and nodded. "Yes you do."
"Why don't you sit down James, you must be tired." Kelly said as she
picked up Olivia out of the seat so James could sit down
James grinned at the little girl as he sat down. "Hello Miss Olivia.
How are you?"
Libby looked at him and smiled. "Hi Uncle James." she said
"So, whats for dinner?" James asked
Min laughed at how cute her niece was as she resumed her grilling
duties. "We are having dead cow."
"Sounds....great." James said
"Oh yeah." Kelly said as she wrinkled her nose.
Bo laughed. "MOOO." he said
Min turned around and snapped her tongs at her brother. "Watch it!
There is room on this grill for you."
"Oooo. I'm scared."
James shook his head. "I would be if I were you Bo, how do you
think we got all this beef?"
Bo's eyes widened. "Um i think I'll be leaving now." he said as he
back away
Min burst out laughing and shook her head. "Bo he's teasing, the beef
came from our neighbor. He slaughtered one of his cows and ran out of room
in the freezer. What did you think?"
Bo stuck out his tongue at his sister. "I knew that." he said and grinned.
"It looks good."
"Yeah you knew that." Kelly said eyeing her husband.
At quarter to 7, Min brought the tray piled with steaks and foiled potatoes
into the kitchen and set them at the dining table. She got out the plates,
silverware and glasses and started to set the table.
"Looks good Min." Bo commented. "Would you like me to help?"
"Well you can get something to drink, there is tea, lemonade, milk
or soda in the fridge."
Kelly brought Libby into the kitchen and sat her down at the
table. The little girl was to short so Kelly brought a couple of pillows
from the living room and boosted her up with them.
James walked through the kitchen, excusing himself. "I'm going to go
change, be right back."
"What does everyone want to drink?" Bo asked
Min put the tray full of steaks and potatos in the center of the table.
"Umm, I better have milk, need the calcium."
"I'll take some tea Honey, and give your daughter some milk." Kelly
said as she got a small steak for Libby and prepared her plate.
"Coming right up." Bo said as he walked over to the refrigerator. "Hey
Min. Do you know what James would like?"
"Probably lemonade, so that's two cow juices, one tea, one lemonade
and whatever you want. Oh! And grab the butter." Min said as she sat down.
"Gotcha." Bo said and opened the refrigerator to get the drinks and
butter out"
James came back in wearing a white Paramedics rule t-shirt and grabbed
the pitcher of lemonade and the pitcher of ice tea. He poured them into
two glasses and put the pitchers back. "Thought you could use a hand, Bo"
He said as he gave Kelly her tea and sat down at the table, sipping his
lemonade.
Thanks." Bo said as he pored the two glasses of milk. After he filled
the glasses he put them back in the refrigerator and grabbed the butter.
He closed the door, got both glasses of milk and went to the table. He
set one glass of milk down in front of his daughter and then gave the other
to his sister. He put the butter down on the table and sat down himself.
Min saw that her brother forgot a drink and she got up and went to
the fridge. "What do you want to drink Bro?"
"Tea is fine." he siad
Min got the empty glass that was in front of her brother and poured
him some tea. She put the pitcher away and set it down in front of them
and returned to her seat.
"Thanks Min." Bo said
James bowed his head and everyone followed. "Dear Lord, we thank
you for this food and bringing our family here safely. Amen."
"Amen." Bo repeated and clapped his hands. "Lets eat."
Min took the foil off her potato and cut it open. She got up from the
table and got the sour cream out of the fridge, she set it down near Kelly
and smiled. "You said sour cream."
Kelly smiled as she opened the container and used her spoon to put
a glob on her daughter's potato. She then doctored her own. "Thanks."
"Its good Min." Bo said as he dug into his steak
"Thanks, I can cook a mean cow huh?" She cleared her throat and
looked at her husband that sitting at the head of the table, a couple of
chairs away. "Uhh, James, there is something I have to tell you."
James looked up from his plate and smiled at his wife. "Sure. What's
up?"
"I went to see Doctor Ford a few day ago, remember? Well we did the
ultrasound and she confirmed what I already knew."
James nodded. "I remember." he said. "What did she say?"
"She told me what sex the baby is." She looked at her husband and smiled
wide. "It's a boy."
"A boy?" James repeated, a little shocked. "Really?"
Min nodded. "A little boy with ten fingers and toes and a strong heart."
"Congratulations to you both." Bo said, smiling.
"Save it for the birth Bo, he still has two months to go." Min said,
taking a bite of her steak.
The rest of the dinner was a happy one, they all ate hardy and Min
stacked the dishes in the sink and cleared the table. No one had room for
dessert so they went into the living room to talk.
"Bo," Kelly said as she sat down. "I think the suitcases are still
out in the van. Could you go get them please?"
"Sure, you going to give me a kiss as a bribe?"
Kelly grinned. "How about as a reward." she said and giggled. "You
go get the suitcases and if you a good boy, I'll give you a kiss."
"That should get his feet moving." Min said as she tucked a pillow
behind her.
Bo took his keys out of his pocket and practically ran out of
the house.
"I'd say so." Kelly said and laughed.
Bo brought the suitcases out of the van and set them down by
the door. He went over to his wife and puckered his lips.
Min chuckled. "He looks like a fish."
Kelly grinned and kissed her husband.
"Thank you, here is your change." Bo said as he kissed her cheek and
sat down on the couch.
James watched this exchange and looked at his wife. "Why don't you
use that bribe method with me?"
Min raised her eyebrow. "I do, how do you think I ended up like this?"
She said as she pointed to her belly.
The phone started ringing just then.
"I'll get it." Min said as she got up and went into the kitchen to
grab the cordless phone.
"Hello?"
"Hey Min."
"Hey Luke! Long time no talk!"
Luke laughed. "Yeah, i'm sorry about that. I've been meaning to call
you back, i've just been busy."
"It's okay. Hey guess who is here for the next week?" Min said as she
walked back into the living room.
"Hmmm. I don't know. Who?"
"Well let me see, he's tall, blond, has a big mouth..."
Luke chuckled. "That would have to be Bo. What's he doing there?"
"I invited them, I'll let you talk to him later. So how is Tracy?"
"Tracy is doing well. She has a couple of more months to go before
the baby is born." Luke said "Speaking of which, how are you doing?"
"Pretty good, got two months to go as well. I found out that I'm having
a boy. I knew it, but I wanted to have the doctor say yes before I told
James."
"Well Congratulations to you both." Luke said. "Yeah we know what ours
is to, we're having a girl."
"Aww Luke that's great! Congratulations to you too, you'll be a good
Daddy."
"Thanks." Luke said. "Yeah i hope so. Tell you the truth, i am a little
nervous."
"Nah, you're going to be great." Min said as she smiled. "You wanna
say hi to Bo?"
Luke chuckled. "Sure, put the cornhead on."
Min started to laugh. "You got it Cousin, hold on." Min passed the
phone to her brother. "Say Hi to Luke."
Bo took the phone from his sister. "Hey Luke, what's going on?"
"Oh nothing much," Luke said. "I got off work a short while ago and
thought i'd call since i haven't had much of a chance lately."
"Where you surprised when Min told you we were here?"
"Yeah i was." Luke said. "Are ya'll taking a vacation?"
"Kelly got a week off and we couldn't decide where to go. Min solved
the problem by inviting us."
"Well i'm sure you'll have fun." Luke said. "How are Kelly and Olivia?"
"Pretty good, Libby is growing like a weed. You ready to be a Daddy
soon?"
"Yeah." Luke said. "I think i'm ready"
"I think you are too, well I think we better get off here, this
is costing you money."
"Alright. Well i'll talk to you later. Have fun on your vacation."
Luke said. "Can i talk to Min again?"
"Sure, see ya later Cousin, bye." Bo handed the phone to Min.
"He wants to talk to you.
"Hey Min." Luke said. "I just wanted to tell you bye and Congratulations
again....And i promise, i'll call you again soon."
"Okay Luke, don't worry I'll keep Bo entertained. Give everyone my
Love over there and tell Tracy Congrats."
"Will do Min. Bye"
"Bye Luke."
Min hung up the phone and went back to the living room. "Luke sends
his Congrats on the male offspring, Honey." Min said as she sat down on
her hubby's lap.
James grinned and put a hand on her stomach. "Is he and Tracy doing
alright?"
"Yup she is having a girl. Bo had already said but I let Luke tell
me anyway."
"Thats great." James said
"Yeah, he is nervous about being a Dad, but Luke will make a great
father."
"I think he will to." James agreed
Kelly looked surprised. "He is nervous? How cute, I can't wait
to hear how Luke will do in the delivery room."
Bo chuckled. "He didn't quite tell me he was nervous." he said. "I'm
sure he'll be fine. I mean i did fine, i think he will be to."
Min looked at her sister-in-law and gave her a mischevious grin.
"So how many packs of smelling salts did it take to bring my brother around?"
Kelly laughed. "No, actually he was fine. Nervous as anything, but
he didn't faint"
"And neither will James, he will be conscious and right there beside
me when our son is born." Min said as she held her husband's hand.
Not long after, Min showed Bo, Kelly and Libby, the rooms they would
be sleeping in. The master bedroom was upstairs and there was an intercom
connecting all the rooms. At 10, the house was quiet and all its occupants
were asleep.
Kelly woke the next morning to the smell of coffee and breakfast being
made. She yawned and turned over to see if her husband was awake yet and
he was still sound asleep.
"Bo," she said poking him in the arm
Bo did not respond, he was sleeping too deeply.
Kelly put a hand on his arm and shook him. "Come on sleepy head.
Time to wake up"
Bo opened his eyes and rubbed them. "What time is it?"
Kelly looked at the clock. "Its almost 9." she said "I think Min has
breakfast going."
"I sure do, get up before it gets cold." A voice rang out of the intercom
that was on the wall.
Bo looked at it and laughed. "Yeah, yeah be right down ya spy."
He said getting out of bed.
"Hey, don't i get a good morning kiss first?" Kelly asked
Bo smiled and went over to the intercom and flipped the
switch to OFF. He sat back down on the bed and kissed his wife. "How was
that?
Kelly grinned. "It was great, thanks." she said and hugged him. "Lets
go see what's for breakfast." she added as she flipped the covers back.
Bo turned the intercom back on as he went to get dressed.
"Wonder what she is making? Smells good."
"I don't know, but it does smeall good." Kelly replied as she herself
got dressed
A few minutes later Bo and Kelly were dressed and they left their room.
As they went down the hall they checked the room their daughter was
sleeping in and she wasn't there.
"Wonder where she is?" Kelly said
"Min got her, she is in the living room."
Kelly nodded relieved and then followed her husband into the living
room. They found Olivia there, already dressed and playing with some toys
on the floor
Libby saw her parents standing there, she got up from the floor and
ran over to them, hugging a leg from each parent.
"Good morning sweatheart." Kelly said, bending down to pick the little
girl up. "Who dressed you this morning?"
"Aunt Min. I ate breakfast too." She said as she nodded at her
mother.
Bo looked at his daughter and made a sad face. "No hug for Daddy?"
He asked pouting.
Libby saw his face and she stretched out her arms. Bo took her from
Kelly's arms and hugged her. The little girl hugged her father's neck.
Kelly smiled as she watched Olivia hug her father
"Enough with the mush! Your breakfast is getting cold!" Min called
in from the kitchen.
Bo kissed his daughter on the cheek and set her down. "Go play." He
said as she scampered off.
Min, dressed in blue jean shorts and a pink t-shirt, was standing at
the stove and she brought two plates over and set them down on the table.
"Huevos Rancheros."
Kelly nodded. "I've heard of it, but i haven't actually tried it before."
she said and walked over to the coffee pot. "Would you like some coffee
Honey?"
"Sure, what exactly are Huevos Rancheros Sis?" Bo said as he sat down
and looked at his plate.
"It's eggs over easy on top of a tortilla with a slice of cheese, covered
with a chili sauce made up of long green chiles, onions and tomatoes."
Min said as she handed Kelly a coffee cup from the cabinet and went over
to the table and sat down.
"Thanks Min." Kelly said as poured herself and Bo coffee. She came
back over and sat a mug down in front of Bo and then sat down in
a chair beside him.
Min saw her brother picking at it with a fork and she sighed. "Oh come
on Bo its good. Boy I need to Texasify you before you go back to Houston."
Bo grinned. "Ok, i'll give it a try." he said and picked up a little
section of it on the fork and put it in his mouth. He chewed and swallowed
and nodded his head. "Its good Min."
"Yup, that's Texas style cooking, country combined with Southwest flavors.
So what do you two want to do today?"
"Hmmm." Bo said. "What is there to do in San Antonio?"
"How about we go shopping." Kelly said as she ate.
"There is lots of things to do. We can go to the Alamo and the
mall. There are some really nice shops." Min said, taking another bite
of her breakfast.
"That sounds great." Kelly said.
"The alamo is fine but the MALL." Bo protested whining.
Min sighed and wiggled her eyebrows up and down at her sister-in-law.
"Well gee I was hoping to get the baby stuff bought. I don't have
one piece of furniture for my son." She said, knowing full well that her
brother would change his tune.
"That sounds like a great idea Min. I'll help you and Bo will to."
Kelly said and smiled at her husband.
Bo grumbled and went back to eating.
Min turned to her brother and fluttered her eyelashes as him. "You
don't want to help me shop for your nephew?"
Bo sighed. "Oh alright, if you insist."
"Oh good! We'll decorate his room in yellow." She said snickering.
"Hey now." Bo said. "No nephew of mine is going to live in a room that
looks like a bananna."
Min and Kelly both started to laugh. "I was kidding you weenie."
They finished breakfast and at half past 10, they all climbed
into Bo and Kelly's minivan. Min sat in the driver's seat and stuck out
her hand.
"Keys please."
Bo went to protest, but remember that he diddn't know his way
around. He sighed and relunctantly handed over the keys.
"Thank you kindly." She said as she started the van.
Min drove them into San Antonio and the 4 of them spent the next few
hours seeing the sights and shopping for the newest member of the family.
At a little past one, Min took her cellular out of her purse and dialed
James' cellular number.
"Hello?"
"Hi Honey, we are over here at the mall, how are things at your end?"
"Oh, things are going well over here." James said. "In fact i will
be coming home early today, probaby around 3"
"Great! We got another couple of hours of shopping and we'll
see you back at the house."
"Great. Love you honey. Bye."
"Love you too, bye.'
"So what did James say?" Kelly asked as she pushed Libby around in
the stroller they rented.
"He'll be home in a couple of hours. Oh look there is the other
baby furniture place." Min pointed to a store that was around the corner
from where they were standing.
"Another Furniture place....JOY." Bo said.
"Oh stop fussing, all I'm missing is a crib." Min said as she grabbed
her brother's arm and dragged him to the store.
It was almost 2:30 when James got off of work. He jumped into his Gray
Ranger and started it and headed for home. About 15 minutes from home,
he saw a lady on the side of the road with a flattire. He pulled over to
the shoulder and stopped.
"Need some help?" he asked as he got out
"Yes thank you." The lady said as she went over to her car.
Since the flattire was on the drivers side, James had to walk out a
little bit onto the expressway to get to it and unfortunatly failed to
notice what was taking place behind him
A cream colored Camry had just changed lanes and as he past the car
in front of him, he came over to quickly, cutting the car off. The driver
lost control of the car momentarily and swearved towards the shoulder.
He saw James, tried to honk the horn but as James turned to look, it was
already to late.
The car hit him and James was knocked up onto the hood of the car from
the force of the blow. He rolled towards the windshield and rolled off
onto the road. The driver slowed down to stop, but panicked and stepped
on the gas and quickly drove away.
Min was paying for her son's new crib when she got a flash of a biege
car coming towards her. She gasped a little, but before she could see what
was happening, everything was gone.
"You ok sis?" Bo asked concerned
"Yeah, I thought I saw something, but its gone."
"What did you see?" Bo asked
Maybe they go home and it rings there
"A car, this little biege one."
"I'm sure it was nothing Min, probably just a flutter you picked
up. Can we go home? Libby needs her nap."
"I agree, besides i'm tired of shopping." Bo said with a grin
"Me too, but now I have everything for the baby." Min said as
she finished paying for the crib and a young guy carried it for her. "Let's
go home, James should be there already."
They left the mall and Min drove the van back to the house, she pulled
into the driveway, noticing right away that James' grey truck was not there.
She decided the furniture could wait and she went and unlocked the house.
Bo and Kelly, with Olivia in her arms came into the house behind her.
"I'm sure he probably just hasn't gotten here yet." Bo said
Just as he said that the phone rang.
"James?" Min said as she picked it up.
"Min this is Dan Rivers."
"Oh Hi Dan, I thought you were James."
"Min..." Dan started and sighed. "Min, there has been an accident,
James is injured. You should get to the hospital right away."
"What? Is he...okay?" She said, looking at her brother and his wife
with a sudden gray face.
Dan sighed again. "It doesn't look to good Min. You need to get down
here as soon as you can."
"Okay...Thanks Dan. I'm leaving right now."
"Alright, see you in a bit. Bye"
"Bye..." She stood there like a statue, the phone in her hand.
Bo came over and gently took the phone out of her hand and put
it back on its cradle. "Min whats wrong? Who was that on the phone?"
"Dan Rivers, he is James' boss."
"What did he say?" Bo asked
Min looked at her brother, her eyes full of worry. "James was in an
accident, hes at SAG."
Bo's eyes widened. "Well lets go then." he said
Everyone piled back into the van. After starting the van, Bo took the
map of San Antonio out of the glovebox and quickly took a look at it. He
found the hospital within a few moments and quickly put it back in the
glovebox and took off towards the hospital.
When the got to the hospital, they went directly to the ER and Dan
met them as they walked in.
"What happened to him?" Min finally spoke after being silent the entire
ride to the hospital.
"He was hit by a car on the expressway after he stopped to help a lady
with a flat." Dan told her. "The driver fled the scene, the police are
looking for him now."
An older man came out of the ER and walked towards Dan.
"How bad is he hurt?" Min asked
Dan looked at the doctor and then back at Min. "This is Dr. Brannigan,
he can tell you."
The older man looked at the frightened woman and shook her hand. "Tom
Brannigan, I'm afraid it isn't good. He's got internal injuries, head trauma,
a collapsed lung. I really have no idea if he will make it through the
night."
Min looked at the doctor as though he was speaking another language.
She swallowed hard, feeling completely numb.
"Can I see him?" She asked, her numb knees shaking a little.
"Of course." Doctor Brannigan said as he pointed out the curtain that
James was behind.
Min looked at her brother and sister-in-law, wordlessly asking them
to accompany her. They both did and walked with Min through the ER and
over to the curtain that the doctor had directed them to. Min reached up
with a shaky hand and clasped the curtain; she threw it back and nearly
screamed with horror at what she saw. James was covered with blood
from his many wounds and his face was partially covered between a thick
bandage that was around his head and the oxygen mask that covered his mouth
and nose. His clothes were lying in shreds all over the floor and he looked
absolutely horrifying to his wife. Min started to breathe heavy as she
looked him over. She was flooded with such emotion that she became a little
unsteady on her feet. She grabbed a hold of the nearby wall and looked
at her brother as a sharp pain suddenly hit her in the back. She started
to sink and Bo grabbed her.
"Easy sis." Bo said soothingly. "Its going to be alright."
Kelly went over to them and she gasped when she saw something
running down Min's leg. "Oh my God."
"What? Bo said. "What's wrong?"
"I think her water broke, I better go get the doctor." Kelly
held onto her daughter as she left the ER.
Min got another pain and she touched her belly. "I think the
baby is coming."
"Its to soon." Bo said "Ok Min, just take it easy and breathe."
Kelly and Libby found Dr. Brannigan down the hall and he grabbed a
gurney and went back to the ER. He took one look at her wet shorts and
nodded. "Yup, let's get her to the delivery room."
"Doc, she's only seven months, its to soon." Bo said as they put Min
on the gurney.
"Yes son I know, but the baby disagrees."
Min was scared and as her brother laid her on the bed, she grabbed
both him and Kelly by the arm. "Don't go, you both come with me."
Bo looked at the doctor. "Is it alright if we go in there with her?"
"Considering where her husband is, I say you both need to, the nurse
will watch your little girl."
A nurse came over and took Libby by the hand. "Come with me Sweetie,
we got a playroom over here." She looked at Kelly who nodded.
Bo nodded and looked down at Min and took her hand. "Its going to be
ok sis. Kelly and I are right here with you."
The nurse took Libby and the four people wheeled the gurney towards
the elevator. Min squeezed their hands. "I can't have him now, James
was supposed to be here with me."
"I know sis." Bo said and squeezed her hand.
Kelly patted her hand, understanding how scary having a baby
was, she was also scared for her sister-in-law.
The doctor pressed the up button and the doors opened, they wheeled
the gurney inside and he pressed the button for the 5th floor.
"Hello, Duke Residence." Luke said on the second ring.
"Luke, its Bo." Bo said as he took a deep breathe
"Hey, what's going on? I just talked to you last night."
Bo sighed. "Its a long story Luke, but the short version is James has
been injured and Min just had her baby."
"What? What happened?"
"He was hit by a car and when Min went in to see him, she went into
labor...Luke, we are going to need some help, do you think you can catch
a flight down here."
"Yeah, Tracy and me will throw some things in a suitcase and
be on the first flight down there. Where are you?"
"We're at San Antonio General." Bo answered. "Luke do you think you
can call Daisy and see if she can come, cause we are going to need all
the help we can get."
"Sure no problem, we'll fly out there, rent a car and see you as soon
as we can." Luke paused for a moment. "How bad is it really?"
"Not to good. Doc isn't sure he'll make it." Bo said. "I'll fill you
in on everything when you get here."
"Okay, just keep an eye on both Min and James, the Calvary is on the
way."
"Just hurry....Please."
"We'll be there fast. Bye."
"Thanks Cousin. Bye"
Bo hung up the phone and rubbed his face. He sighed and walked down
the hall to his sisters room. He went inside and saw his wife sitting in
a chair near the bed.
"How is she?" he asked
"She hasn't woken up yet." Kelly said as she sighed.
Bo sighed again and stepped over to the bed. "I talked to Luke. He
said he and Tracy will be on the first flight down here. I told him to
see if he couldn't get Daisy as well."
"Oh good, I think she is going to need her family, especially if..."
She stopped and swallowed hard, forcing herself to say the words. "Bo have
you talked to the doctor about the baby? I mean he was so small."
As Bo was about to answer, Dr Brannigan walked in the room.
"Hi, has she come around yet?" He asked, looking over at the pale sleeping
woman.
Kelly shook her head. "No, not yet. " she said. "How is the baby?"
"The baby, well...I know that she has enough on her plate already but
her son is not doing well either. He only weighs 5 pounds. His lungs aren't
fully developed so the next 24 hours are going to be touch and go."
"He isn't going to make it?" A weak voice spoke and the two men and
Kelly looked over to see that Min was awake.
"We don't know that Min, he could be okay. We just don't know right
now." The doctor said as he touched her hand.
Bo reached out and stroked her hair. "He's going to be just fine Min,
don't you worry.
"He's right, he will be fine." Kelly said as she touched her
hand.
Min looked at the three people in her room. "I want to see him, I want
to see my son."
Doctor Brannigan sighed and nodded. "I'll see what I can do about that."
He said as he left.
Min watched him leave and she started to tear up. "Has he said anything
about James?"
Bo sighed. "He's the same." he said. "James is a fighter, he'll pull
through this."
"I'm scared...scared that I'll lose them both and end up alone."
"No honey. Their both going to be fine, you'll see." Bo said trying
to reassure her. "Your not going to be alone."
Min was getting angry. "Do I know that Bo? You heard what he said,
James is dying and so is my son."
The doctor came back in the room pushing a wheelchair "I've arranged
for ya'll to see the baby. I can take you to him."
Min nodded and threw back her covers, she was still feeling pretty
weak but she managed to get down from the bed and sit down in the chair..
"Take me to see him."
The doctor nodded and started to push the wheelchair out the door.
"Hes in the neonatal intensive care." he said as they walked to the elevator.
Once they were there, he pressed the button for the elevator to come down
Kelly and Bo walked beside the wheelchair, praying that the newest
member of the family was going to pull through. The elevator dinged and
the doors opened, they stepped through and went down to the 3rd floor.
They arrived on the 3rd floor, Doctor Brannigan stopped in front of
the large glass window. He handed blue hospital scrubs to the three adults
and when they were on, he opened the door and took them inside.
The room was filled with little glass boxes and Doctor Brannigan took
Min to one at the far side of the room. He stopped the chair and wheeled
the glass box over. Min leaned forward and peered through the glass. She
saw a little pink baby with lightish colored hair. He was little, but not
as small as some of the others she could see in the room. He was lying
on his back and there was a tube taped to his nose. There were electrodes
taped to his chest that was rising and falling rapidly and she pressed
her hands to the box.
"Oh...my baby....he's so small." She whispered.
Bo and Kelly looked at the baby as well. After a moment, Kelly turned
away and put her head against Bo's chest and he hugged her wordlessly
"I've seen smaller survive Min, and I've seen bigger that didn't, the
next couple of days will tell the tale." Doctor Brannigan patted her shoulder
and wheeled the box back to where it was.
Min didn't know how to take this latest blow, she hung her head and
didn't say a word. She had reached the end of her rope and her face reflected
it. Her eyes were blank and hollow and there was a distant look to them.
Bo went to his sister and hugged her. "Its going to be ok Min."
His sister didn't do anything, she didn't even return the hug.
"Min?" Bo repeated and looked at his sister. He saw the blank look
and called the doctor over
Doctor Brannigan took out his penlight and shined it in her eyes. "She's
in delayed shock, it isn't uncommon after all she's been through."
"Will she be alright?" Kelly asked
"That is really up to her. Let's get her back to her room." He
answered as he wheeled Min out of the room and down the hall towards the
elevators.
Bo was sitting outside his sister's room and he glanced at his watch.
It was half past 10 and he started to wonder where the rest of his family
was as he leaned forward and rubbed his face. The elevator opened suddenly
and out came Luke, Tracy and Daisy. They saw Bo sitting there and then
went to him.
"Bo..." Luke said as he touched him on the shoulder.
Bo jumped and looked up to see who had done that. He was relieved to
see his cousin. He put a hand to his heart to try and calm it "You scared
me."
"Sorry about that Cousin." Luke said as Bo stood up and hugged him.
"Its ok. I'm just glad your here." Bo said
Daisy waited her turn and hugged Bo tightly. "How is James? And what
happened with Min? We left so fast, Luke didn't explain.
"He didn't tell me much either." Tracy said as Bo hugged her next.
Bo nodded and sighed. He looked down briefly at her stomach and hoped
she wouldn't be going into labor by the end of this as well. He shook that
thought off and ran a hand throw his hair.
"Sit down and I'll explain."
Everyone sat down.
Bo sighed again. "Apparently James had stopped to help someone change
a flat and something happened and he got hit by a car. Like i told Luke
the doctors aren't sure yet if he's going to pull through just yet." Bo
stopped for a second to collect his thoughts. "After we got here, and the
doctor told us how bad it was, Min went in to see him and thats when she
went into labor. The baby is alive, just premature and the doctors won't
know for sure for awhile if he is going to make it...Min saw the baby a
little after I called Luke and...shes now in some kind of shock and neither
Kelly or I can get her to respond."
Daisy gasped and covered her mouth. "She might lose them both?"
Bo nodded.
Luke ran his fingers through his hair and rubbed his neck as he looked
at his cousin. "You can't get her to respond Bo?"
Bo shook his head. "I've tried everything Luke and nothing is working...I
was thinking maybe you could give it a try."
Daisy nodded, wiping her eyes. "Can we see the baby Bo? Will they let
us?"
Tracy nodded. "Yeah, do you think they would let us?"
Luke cleared this throat." Honey I don't think you should see him,
that last thing you need is to get upset too."
Bo shook his head. "Lukes right Tracy." he said. "You can help us with
Min if you want to or keep Olivia company."
Tracy nodded and touched her belly. "Does the baby look that bad Bo?"
She asked in a low voice.
Bo sighed, trying to figure out how much he should say. "He doesn't
look that bad, its just.....I don't want you getting upset."
"All right Bo, but I think we should go see Min."
Luke nodded his head. "Yeah, let's go see her."
Bo stood up. "Come on." he said and went inside.
Kelly was sitting in the chair again and she looked at him when he
came in.
"Honey, Luke and them are here." he said
Kelly stood up and hugged Luke, Daisy and Tracy as they came into the
room. "I'm glad you all are here."
Min was in her bed, she was partially sitting up, but her eyes were
looking down at the bed. She didn't stir or react to the sudden increase
of people in her room.
"Hey cousin." Luke said as he went over and sat down on the bed.
"I've been talking to her this whole time Luke, she hasn't done anything."
Kelly said as she went over to Bo and leaned against him.
Luke nodded and put a hand to his goatee, that he had grown, and stroked
it, trying to figure out what he could say to bring her out of this.
Daisy sat down behind Luke and touched Min's hand."Honey, it's Daisy,
aren't you going to say Hi?"
Tracy came over as well. "I'm here to Min"
Bo put his arm around Kelly's shoulder and sighed. "Why don't we got
downstairs and get Libby. I want to check on James." He looked at Tracy
and Daisy. "Do you want to come? I'm sure by now James is in a room too."
"Yeah, why don't ya'll go ahead, i'll see if I can't bring her out
of this." Luke told them and then looked at Bo. "Bo have you been able
to feel anything from her?"
Bo leaned close to his sister and touched her forehead. "I see two
images going around and around like a record." Bo paused trying to look
at the images. When they finally came into focus he gasped a little. "One
is James in the ER, all bloody and banged. The other is the baby, with
those things hooked up to him. It's like she is trapped that little box
with him."
Luke nodded. "So it would be best if she came out of this quickly."
he said and sighed. "Why dont' ya'll go on and i'll give it a try."
Bo nodded and kissed Min's forehead. "We'll be back soon Honey."
Bo, Daisy and Tracy left Luke alone with Min and left the room.
Luke sighed and looked at Min. "Ok cousin, its just us, no one else
is here. Why don't you talk to me."
Still no response
"Min if this is your idea of getting back at me for not calling you,
this isn't funny."
Min didn't speak, she just laid there like she had been since she saw
her baby.
Luke reached over and picked up her hand and sqeezed it. "Min i know
all this is hard on you, but you need to wake up so we can talk about it."
The door to Min's room opened and an older woman in white stepped inside.
She saw Luke holding Min's hand.
"Excuse me but who are you? It's family only."
"I'm her cousin." Luke told the nurse
The nurse changed her tone."I'm sorry. I didn't know." She thought
about it for a moment. "Would you like to see the baby? Dr. Brannigan told
us to let her family see him."
Luke sighed, he wasn't sure if he wanted to but he knew he might be
able to help Min if he did. "Sure." he said
"Come on then." She said as she touched Luke on the shoulder.
Luke nodded and put Min's hand back down on the bed. "I'll be back
in a litte bit cousin." he told her and then followed the nurse out the
door
The nurse took Luke to the elevator and down to the 3rd floor. She
gave him a gown to wear and took him inside the room. She took him over
to the little glass box and Luke looked inside to get his first glimpse
of the newest family member.
Luke gasped sofly. "Oh lord." he said, thinking that if his baby would
be born now, that she would look exactly like this. He knew now why Min
had the reaction she had.
Bo, Tracy, Daisy and Kelly had gotten Libby and had found out from the
nurse's station what room James was in. Room 105. They walked down the
hall and quickly found the room. Bo took a deep breath and pushed the door
open.
The only bed in the room was behind a curtain and Bo gently pulled
the curtain back. James was there, looking better than he had in the ER.
His head was still banged and there was still an oxygen mask on his face.
He was hooked up to several machines and there was an IV in each arm. Bo
swallowed hard, glad that Min was not there. He turned to look at everyone.
"Oh lord." Daisy said, putting a hand to her mouth.
Tracy closed her eyes and turned her back, she understood why Min had
gone into labor. "I'm going to go out in the hall." She said as she picked
up Libby and left.
Kelly watched Tracy leave and she let go of her husband's hand and
went outside to be with her. Daisy sighed and looked down at James. "Do
you think he can pull out of this Cousin?"
Bo sighed. "I don't know Daisy, he is pretty bad off, but he's strong
and i think he will pull through this." he said and then sighed again.
"For Min's sake i hope he does."
Luke went back upstairs to his Cousin's room, still talking to her.
He was getting nowhere with her and he sighed and rubbed his eyes, feeling
the lateness of the hour starting to catch up with him.
The door opened and Bo came in the room.
"You ok Luke?" he asked
"Yeah I'm okay Bo, where is everyone?"
"The ladies all went home to get some rest, they'll be back tomorrow."
Bo said as he came over to the bed. "Have you been able to get anywhere
with her?"
Luke shook his head and sighed. "No, not at all." He looked at his
cousin, his eyes reflecting frustration and fear. "Bo...I saw the baby."
"You did?" Bo said. "What do you think?"
"I think he can make it. He comes from strong parents and a strong
family line. I really believe he will live Bo."
Bo nodded "I think he will to." he said and then looked at Luke for
a moment. "It must not have been easy for you to see him."
Luke looked down at the floor for a moment before lifting his head
to look at his Cousin. "No...it wasn't. I mean...Tracy is 7 months too
Bo. I saw that tiny pink baby and I couldn't help but think about my daughter.
I can honestly say that I understand the kind of fear and pain that put
Min in this stupor."
Bo nodded and looked at his sister and sighed. "I just wish she would
come out of it."
Luke nodded his head. "So do I Bo..."
The night passed slowly. Both Bo and Luke took shifts watching Min and
sleeping. They continued to talk to her, but it did no go, they still could
not pull her out of the stupor she was in. The women came back around 6am
and they had brought breakfast with them.
"Luke you watch her and i'll go eat and then i'll relieve you. That
sound ok?" Bo asked
Luke yawned and covered his mouth as he nodded his head. "Yeah go ahead,
I just hope they brought some strong coffee."
Bo nodded and walked out, leaving Luke alone in the room.
Tracy passed Bo and went inside the room carrying a small cup of coffee.
She set it down on the tray beside her husband and rubbed his shoulders.
"How ya doing Honey? Long night?"
"Hey sweetheart." Luke said and nodded. "Yeah it was a long night."
He picked up the coffe and took the top of and took a sip
"Yeah for us too, I don't think anyone got any sleep, except for Libby.
I couldn't stop thinking about James and the baby."
Luke nodded, and then turned towards Tracy. "I saw the baby last night."
he said after a moment.
Tracy looked at him with wide eyes. "You did? How does he look?"
"I think he will too...James and Min are tough people. It is in his
genes to fight."
Luke chuckled
Tracy smiled and raised an eyebrow. "And what is so funny?"
Luke shook his head. "Well the baby is part Duke and we all are fighters."
he said
Bo came back in the room just then."Why don't you go get something
to eat Luke, I'll take over."
"Okay Bo. Come on Honey." He said as he took Tracy's hand."We'll be
right outside."
Luke and Tracy left the room and Bo sat down in the chair Luke had
occupied.
Bo looked over at his sister and sighed. He tried to talk to her with
his mind, but he got nothing back from her. He only saw the images of James
and her baby going over and over in her mind. Bo sighed and rubbed his
eyes, it had been a long hard night. He didn't sleep well and the current
situation was beginning to take its toll on him. He picked up his sister's
hand and squeezed it.
"Min please....we are all here waiting for you and so is James and
your son."
Min remained unmoved, her eyes still looking down at the bed. The only
way he could tell she was alive was the up and down movement of the blanket
that covered her partially.
Bo exhaled loudly and put his head down on the edge of the bed, before
he could stop them, the tears began to flow.
Luke came back into the room and found Bo like that.
"Bo?" he questioned. "Are you okay?"
Bo lifted his head and looked up at him. He wiped his face. "I'm sorry
I...I just..." He shook his head.
Luke nodded and jerked his head towards the door."Why don't you go
outside, I'll stay with her."
Bo nodded and got up, he looked at Luke, a bit embarrassed at his loss
of emotion. "I guess I kinda lost it." He said then left the room.
Luke watched him go and then looked back over at Min. He walked over
to the bed and stood looking down at his Cousin.
"Ok Min. That's it." Luke said, none to nicely. "Look what you just
did, you just upset your brother....And to tell you the truth you are upsetting
everyong else including me....Min you have got to come back now and help
your husband and your baby."
Min was unresponsive, as before.
Luke reached down and placed his hands on her shoulders. "Min, your
being selfish." he said, shaking her a little. "Min, damnit you have got
to come out of this! You have a baby that needs you and a husband that
needs you, come out of this now."
The door to the room opened and Bo and Kelly both came in, hearing
the raised voice of their cousin. Bo saw Luke with his hands on his sister's
shoulders.
"Luke what are you doing you can't-"
Kelly realized that Luke was doing the right thing and she grabbed
Bo by the arm as he started to walk towards the bed. "No Bo, she needs
this, let him be."
"Min, i'm sure you heard me." Luke said and started shaking his cousin
a little bit harder. "Min, you have got to wake up! Snap out of it!"
Min felt the strong hands of her cousin shaking her and the walls that
surrounded her and kept her in this state seemed to shatter like glass.
Her eyes suddenly seemed to focus and she could see the face of her cousin.
Everything that had rendered her catatonic came back to her all at once.
She remembered James and her baby and to the surprise of everyone, she
covered her face and started to cry hysterically.
Luke's faced softened and he took his hands away from Min's shoulders
and sat down on the bed and moved her so he could hold her. "Shhh." he
said. "It going to be alright."
Min leaned against his chest and let her emotions pour out of her.
She put her arms around him and held him tightly.
Luke rocked her and looked at both Bo and Kelly.
Bo was smiling at him and went over to them both. He touched his sister
on the shoulder, patting it gently. He was so relieved she was awake.
Min felt her brother's hand on her shoulder and she lifted her head
to look at him. Her face was with tears but her eyes were bright. "Bo....please
tell me James and my son are still alive?" She asked in a tiny voice.
Bo nodded and smiled. "They are Min. There still fighting."
She closed her eyes and whispered a prayer of thanks to God that they
were. She opened them and looked back at Luke. "You came here because of
me?"
"Of course." Luke said. "Part of my family was in trouble, i couldn't
sit around and do nothing."
"You mean like shaking the stuffing out of me?" Min asked with a small
smile before laughing and hugging him and Bo at the same time.
Luke shrugged. "Well i had to find some way to bring you back." he
said and smiled. "And i am glad your back."
Min let go of both Bo and Luke and wiped her eyes. She saw Kelly standing
near the door and she smiled at her. "Hi Kelly."
Kelly smiled and came over to the bed. "Hey Min." she said. "I'm
glad your back. How do you feel?"
"I feel all right, the last thing I remember clearly was seeing my
son in that little box, then seeing Luke's face and that's it. How long
was I out of it?"
"Your were out for most of the day sis." Bo said
Luke nodded." Right, when Tracy and Daisy and I got here you were already
like that."
Min's eyes grew wide. "Tracy and Daisy are here too?"
Bo nodded. "Yeah, there here to."
Min looked at both the men and swallowed hard. "Has anyone seen James
or the baby?"
"I saw your son not too long ago." Luke said in a low voice.
"The girls and I saw James last night." Bo said
"I want to see them..."
"We should probably talk to the doctor." Bo said. "Luke, you want to
come?"
Luke nodded. "Yeah good idea Cousin, I haven't met him yet."
Bo nodded. "Min, we'll be back in a few minutes." he said and he and
Luke walked out the door
Bo and Luke left Min and went into the hall. They told Daisy and Tracy
about Min coming out of her state and went to go find the doctor.
After asking the nurse where Dr. Brannigan was, they found him in the
cafeteria eating breakfast.
"Doc?" Bo asked as they approaced his table
"Good Morning." He said as he sipped his coffee, looking at the two
men. He realized he hadn't met Luke and he stuck out his hand. "Tom Brannigan,
nice to meet you."
"Luke Duke." Luke said as they shook hands
"Why don't you both have a seat, after my coffee I'm going to check
on James and the baby. Has Min made any signs that she is coming out of
her shock?"
Bo smiled as he sat down. "She came out of it a few minutes ago and
is asking to see both James and the baby." he said.
Doctor Brannigan smiled. "Great...I knew she would eventually, of course
she can. I want to take him off the respirator and see if he can breathe
on his own. If he can then he will be on the road to recovery."
"Great." Bo said
"I will check on James, and then meet you in the Infact ICU." He said
as he finished his coffee. "Excuse me."
"Alright, thanks doc." Bo said as he and Luke got up as well.
As they were walking out Bo looked at Luke and cleared his throat.
"Luke...you can go keep an eye on James if you want, you don't have to
go back up there."
"No Bo, he is my kin too. I want to be there when the doctor takes
him off that respirator. I appreciate your concern though." He said as
he slapped Bo on the back.
"Welcome." Bo said as they walked back to Min's room
Doc Brannigan went down to the first floor to check on James. He went
into room 105 and pulled back the curtain. He took out his penlight and
lifted the unconscious man's eyelids. His pupils were the same as they
were since the accident and he clicked off his light and stuck it into
his pocket. He took James' vital signs and charted everything.
"Well James you are still the same but your vital signs are getting
stronger."
A nurse came in and he handed her the chart. "Keep the medicine the
same."
"Yes Doctor." She said as she took the chart and checked the medicine
Min was talking to Kelly, Tracy, Daisy and Libby when the boys came
back into the room.
"Did you talk to the Doctor?" She asked as they came in.
Bo nodded. "Yeah, he said we can go on up. He'll meet us there after
he checks on James."
"Well, I think we should all go up there." Min said as she looked around
at everyone.
"All of us?" Tracy asked as she touched her belly.
Min saw her and nodded. "I think you should...I need all of you there."
Tracy looked at Luke, waiting for him to interject.
Luke put his arm around his wife and lowered his voice. "You can stay
here and watch Libby if you want. You don't have to go up there."
"He's my nephew too Luke..."
Luke nodded. "Alright, if your sure." he said
"What about Libby?" Kelly asked as she picked up her daughter.
"We could have a nurse look after her." Bo said
"No I want her to come, she is part of the family, she needs to be
there."
"Alright. " Bo said reluctantly, still not sure. "Lets go then."
Min nodded and got up carefully got up from her bed and started to
walk.
"The nurse said I need to walk."
"Are you sure. We can get you a wheelchair." Bo said
She took a few steps and stopped. "Forget it, get the chair."
Bo nodded. "I'll be right back." he said and left the room.
He came back a moment later, pushing a wheelchair and he brought it
over to his sister
